My Darling of the Mountains is a remake of a much older film (the original stems from 1938) and apparently Ishii wanted to stay quite close to the source material. Though there is a slight hint of his previous weird streak, Ishii reverts to his poetic side to make this film work.
My Darling of the Mountains is a faithful remake of Hiroshi Shimizu’s The Masseurs and a Woman.As someone who loves Shimizu’s films, I approached this movie with caution. Most modern interpretations of classics fail to both properly modernize their subject and preserve the spirit of the original.
